KITCHEN SHIFT 8 PILLARS OF HEALTH - PILLAR 4
At Kitchen Shift my clients follow the guidance of 8 Pillars of Health. To dive in and explore these Pillars is an invitation to explore you! We are each uniquely designed and these Pillars go deep and can uncover places you have been “stuck” that a diet never will!
In the coming weeks- I want to give you a peek into some of the education I offer clients around these Pillars.
PILLAR 4- Supplementation
Supplement statistics
Estimates put the US supplement industry somewhere between 36 and 45 million dollars.
Yet, 92 percent of the population is suffering from at least one mineral or vitamin deficiency based on the Dietary Reference Intakes.
According to the CDC and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA):
9 out of 10 Americans are deficient in potassium
7 out of 10 are deficient in calcium
8 out of 10 are deficient in vitamin E
50 percent of Americans are deficient in vitamin A, vitamin C, and magnesium
More 50 percent of the general population is vitamin D deficient, regardless of age
90 percent of Americans of color are vitamin D deficient
Approximately 70 percent of elderly Americans are vitamin D deficient
Americans are overfed and undernourished. Even if you consume a “perfect” diet, the odds are something is missing.
There are theories as to why this is the case.
The soil in which our produce grows is nutrient deficient
The SAD diet- filled with sugar and processed fake food is acting as an anti- nutrient
Stress
Supplementation has become more important than ever with these known deficiencies. However, we also know that there is no such thing as a magic pill.
Supplementation is just that. A supplement or an “enhancement” to a healthy whole food diet and lifestyle.
When I work with clients, we put time and attention into the first 3 Pillars of Health (I have 8) initially. Pillar 1- The food we eat. Pillar 2- How we move (exercise) our body. Pillar 3- Mindfulness, meditation and breathwork that helps us build proper and positive mindset, and takes us from chaos to calm.
But supplementation has its place. In fact, supplementation can help us with those first 3 pillars and the pillars following (sleep, gut health, the list goes on).
A good quality multivitamin, vitamin D, omega 3 help supplement my whole food sources. They fill in the gaps. A high-quality protein powder and collagen powder- help repair my muscles and joints so that I can recover from my workout and attack the next one. Magnesium and adaptogens can help me settle into a calm state so I can show up to meditation with more frequency.
Supplements are enhancers and in my opinion are an important part of a healthy lifestyle. Especially as we age.
To browse the Kitchen Shift shop, you can see I have a lot of choices. I have curated the best brands and the best catalog of products. With that said, you don’t need everything!
Here are some tips when choosing supplements:
Get labs at least once a year. Is your vitamin D low? Your magnesium? Your iron? Vitamin B levels? Know what you are working with.
Think about what you are trying to accomplish when choosing a supplement. I suggest working on one area at a time. Your energy levels low? Your sleep really suffering? Your gut a mess? Don’t tackle all of that at once. Start with one goal in mind and give those supplements some time to work on the condition in combination with lifestyle changes.
Don’t start 7-8 things at once. You will find it hard to keep a routine and you will be hard pressed to know what works. I encourage clients to only add two- max 3 new supplements to their routine at once.
